When you need to wake your children at 2 a.m. to get to the airport for a 7 a.m. flight because the reports of delays, cancellation, and general airport chaos at Toronto Pearson are at their highest... and then when your flight is delayed indefinitely and you watch the airline stewards walk away and you think this is going to be a while... but then when it's only two hours and that seems manageable... and then when your flight is to Calgary even though you want to fly to Saskatchewan and you are literally flying over where you want to be because, somehow, it uses fewer aeroplan points to fly further away... and when you finally get settled in your rental vehicle... and when you stop for something to eat and your body doesn't even understand what time it is or what meal you should be eating... THAT'S WHEN you should absolutely drive the opposite way of your intended destination of Shaunavon to go to Canmore instead to show your kids the mountains... and THAT'S WHEN you should take a hike up a mountain because, even though you've been up for 15 hours already, the mountain air and the magic of the landscape will fill you with new energy and your kids will walk and hike and surprise you with their endurance ALL BECAUSE THE MOUNTAINS ARE THAT AMAZING. And then... you should eat a delicious summer on a patio with a mountainous view and then you should go to your hotel and GO TO BED almost a complete 24 hours after you have woken up. That is my advice to you.
Our trip to Canmore was short but beautiful - a fun little introduction to the Rockies. We will definitely plan to go back and make a longer holiday of it. But this trip was just overnight, rising the next day to head to Mass at Our Lady of the Rockies Shrine, before enjoying yummy smoothies and breakfast, going to the bathroom a thousand times, and, finally, starting our drive to our intended destination.
100% worth it.
