What does an Explorer look like after a weekend of winter camp?

Olympics of the winter and summer variety are fun, but do you know what's also great? The Lego Olympics. Oh, where are those hosted, you ask? Right here at our house. Just an exclusive group of athletes from Australia, Croatia, Spain, USA, and Canada and a bin of Legos. And - ta da - one of the most exhilarating spectacles of engineering and athleticism. See here.

(Also, Happy Belated Birthday Party, Joe!)

Rice is great... unless you are a baby then it is sticky and perplexing and frustrating. But also tasty.

janie the cow

Here she is... nine months! With two more teeth and a lot of places to go. Janie is awesome and so much fun. (But she would rather eat these paper costumes than have her picture taken.)

We love you, Janie!

sew cute

Annie got a sewing machine for Christmas! Can you imagine the mother/daughter sewing days?! Oh, so sew fun! I will use that "sew" pun a million times to express my joy with the fun of all this. We had a little lesson and she was pretty excited and pleased with herself. We made a pillow for her cousin and, I imagine, there are many more pillows to come.

and then...

Because Jane was so proud of herself and the "I can sit up by myself" thing, she decided to go ahead and figure out crawling as well. She's a slow mover at this point, and looks a bit like a prancing puppy, but she's pretty cute.

christmas in guelph

When we were in Shaunavon, enjoying the snow there, I had a grand idea that, when we got back to Oakville, we could host a tobogganing party for Joe's friends for his belated birthday celebrations. And then we got back to Oakville... and there was no snow left. Sad face. And no tobogganing party. BUT THEN (this is just an emotional roller coaster, I know) we went to Guelph to have our late Christmas with the Flahertys and THERE WAS SNOW. So we got to toboggan after all, hurray, hurrah. I just love a happy ending.

look what I found

Went to get Janie up from her nap... and this is what I saw. Someone figured out how to sit up from lying down. (Not going to lie... I did question all little people in the house to find out if anyone went into Janie's room and sat her up... they convinced me they hadn't.)

Look at Janie. She's so clever.

Who's feeding the birds in the winter? We are. And 100,000 other people, based on the chubbiness of these particular birds. We went to the RBG with our black oil sunflower seeds just to make sure these chickadees were getting their winter feed. Here's what we learned:
1. Chickadees are very fast. Faster than my camera.
2.  Henry was maybe under the impression that we were there to catch the birds? A couple of times a chickadee landed on his mitten and he slowly inched his other hand forward like he was going to trap that little sucker and bring him home.
3. There are better days to feed the birds than when the temperature is -100 and the wind is fierce. Much better days.

But make the best of it! It's still fun! When parents insist it's fun! (But note the lack of photos of people's faces... which would indicate that this day was maybe more cold than fun....)

the gals

Here they are, in their matchy matchy matchy outfits. I suspect this will be the one and only time that these outfits are all clean and out of laundry baskets at the same time. So - enjoy - I took photos to commemorate the occasion.

Clara's favourite song, listened to in the car for 4.5 hours, and posted here because I'm sure Grammie is missing the repeated singing of it. You are welcome.
