hard days

We're working out some kinks in this "raising three kids" business, especially during the days when Daddy is at work and Mama's at it alone. The boys seem to have gotten louder since Annie was born, the decibel level raising as is the attention they seek. There are (many) moments when all three are crying at once. Henry wants to be held, they both refuse to share, and Joe just screams - looks at me and yells for things I can't even understand.

But Annie is his medicine. As he begins to shout, I will ask him if he wants to hold Annie and, yes, he does. And he softens. He changes. I can see his body relax and his soul calm. And she is content, feeling loved and secure in his little arms. When he is done, I take Annie back and he goes on to play. And maybe in just ten minutes the yelling will start again and in just ten minutes I will need to ask him again if he wants to hold his little sister, but we'll take it. We'll find what works and use it. We'll figure all this out as it goes along.

And even on the hardest days, especially on the hardest days, we'll just hold on.

(Um, yes, they are watching tv. But cuddling is still cuddling, not matter how it happens.)

hi emilie

I know my kids cried a lot today, and maybe this wasn't the best first impression of Annie, and you had a crash-up and got a huge bump on your head... but wasn't today fun? Won't we look back on this someday and laugh? Won't you please come again?

Thanks. (Because you said "yes" right?)

today

runs in the family

This is Annie's hair. It stands up like this all the time. It makes me think of a combover in the wind... (... just like Papa Gerald used to have). As for the pout, see here and here for comparison.

an apple a day

An apple a day for about... two months? If we each eat one? Including Annie. That's how long it will take to eat up all the apples we brought home from Chudleigh's. So there are some apple pies, crisps, and sauce in our future. Come on over if you want some.

happy birthday jonah!

hot cereal

This is the boys' weekend treat... breakfast with daddy. Some days it's pancakes, sometimes waffles, but today, hot cereal. And where am I in these pictures? Upstairs, sleeping in. So, yup. Weekend treat indeed.

who is this kid, part II

Has anyone seen my newborn baby? This one is a month old.

first day

... of nursery school.

He was nervous.

In the weeks leading up, he told everyone how much he loved school (without having ever been) but, today, he wasn't so confident. But when I picked him up, he ran to me, smiling, and said, "You're right, Mommy! School is fun!"

Phewf.

Anyway, who is this kid? Wasn't he just born?

thank you

To Grammie and Papa...

Thank you for sharing your house with us for those two weeks. We know we can be loud. And bossy. And messy. And disruptive. But we are also glad and grateful and happy that we have this home away from home. Thank you for the meals and the cuddles and the trips to the park and the stories and the big bathtub and the Frosty Treat and the combine rides. We are excited to see you again at Christmas. Until then, rest up.

Love,
Joe, Henry, and Annie

roar

The boys have dinosaurs on the brain lately so, while we were in Shaunavon, we headed down to the T. Rex Centre. We arm wrestled a t. rex, painted a dino tooth, and looked at big, fossilized poop. Arm wrestling and poop... it's the equation for a good time.

brotherly advice

While trying to convince his reluctant younger brother to go through airport security, Joe wrapped his arm around Henry and offered this:

"It's okay, Henry. They just want to make sure you don't have a knife."
